We are currently facing a situation where two single young female staff, working as community mobilisers, have been accused of having sex outside of marriage and therefore of being prostitutes. The allegations are unfounded but we are now faced with a security situation because the rumour is going around that our organisation hires prostitutes. The women's only fault has been that they are standing up for themselves a little bit. They dare to question their elders and they answer questions and ask questions. This trait however limits their ability to interact with communities, which is their job.

We are now faced with the dilemma that if we dismiss them (for their inability to be accepted into the communities) we are not following our Gender policies - and are probably setting back the gender agenda; they have done nothing wrong. If we do not fire them, we are putting ourselves at serious risk from the communities where we work as well as nearby areas where the rumours are spreading. The rumours now state that our organisation hires prostitutes for the pleasure of our senior national staff.

Here is an opportunity to work together on critical issues we face. What advice/experience and support can we bring to this situation?

In the areas I work in we find key advocates for our work within the community to help our staff when conflicts arise in the field. From my experience, when a community starts complaining about women or men staff there is often a personal conflict/issue coming to the surface. Who are your supporters in the communities and how have they responded to help your staff?
